Iran Pakistan Focuses on Security, Trade & Stability

In a significant diplomatic engagement, Iran and Pakistan have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral ties and tackling key regional challenges. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Pakistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Amina Baloch in Tehran to discuss security, trade, and political cooperation.

The high-level meeting occurred on the sidelines of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Deputy Foreign Ministers' High-Level Committee session, reflecting both nations' strategic partnership.

Iran and Pakistan’s Shared Vision for Stronger Ties

Foreign Minister Araghchi emphasized Iran’s renewed commitment to strengthening its relationship with Pakistan under the leadership of President Pezeshkian.

“Pakistan plays a crucial role in our regional foreign policy. We seek to elevate our cooperation through sustained diplomatic engagement,” Araghchi stated.

Deputy Foreign Minister Amina Baloch echoed these sentiments, highlighting Pakistan’s unwavering dedication to deepening ties with Iran.

“Pakistan is committed to forging a more dynamic partnership with Iran. Our focus remains on bolstering cooperation in security, trade, and regional stability,” Baloch said.

Key Topics of Discussion: Security, Trade, and Regional Issues

The two diplomats delved into crucial matters of mutual concern, including:

  • Border Security: Enhanced cooperation on border management to curb cross-border terrorism.

  • Drug Trafficking & Illegal Migration: Joint efforts to combat narcotics trade and address migration issues.

  • Economic Partnership: Expanding trade, with a focus on the Iran-Pakistan (IP) Gas Pipeline and infrastructure projects.

Regional Developments and Geopolitical Challenges

Iran and Pakistan’s foreign ministers also discussed major geopolitical developments, including the situations in:

  • Afghanistan: The need for a stable and inclusive government.

  • Gaza Conflict: Humanitarian aid and diplomatic intervention.

  • Syria & Lebanon: Strengthening the role of regional allies in promoting peace.

Both countries emphasized the importance of multilateral cooperation and regional diplomacy in addressing these challenges.

Iran-Pakistan Military and Security Cooperation

In early 2024, Iran and Pakistan showcased diplomatic maturity by swiftly resolving border tensions. This led to significant military and security agreements aimed at enhancing stability in the region. The visit of Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Iran’s Chief of Staff, to Pakistan in early 2025 further solidified these commitments.

Economic Ties: A $10 Billion Trade Goal

Economic collaboration has been a focal point of Iran-Pakistan relations. The late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s visit to Pakistan in April 2024 marked a new era of economic engagement. Key agreements were signed to boost trade to $10 billion over the next five years.

The two nations continue to push forward with the Iran-Pakistan (IP) Gas Pipeline, a multi-billion-dollar energy project vital for regional energy security.

The Future of Iran-Pakistan Relations

With robust diplomatic engagements and growing economic ties, Iran and Pakistan are poised to strengthen their partnership in 2025 and beyond.

As global powers closely monitor developments in South Asia, the deepening of Iran-Pakistan ties underscores the shifting geopolitical landscape, emphasizing regional self-reliance and cooperation.
