Washington, D.C. – In a dramatic and historic shake-up of US military leadership, President Donald Trump has dismissed General Charles Q. Brown, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, along with five other senior military officials. This unexpected move marks one of the most significant overhauls of the Pentagon in modern history.
Trump announced on Truth Social that he would nominate retired Lieutenant General Dan "Razin" Caine to replace Brown, making it the first time in US history that a retired general has been recalled to serve as the nation’s highest-ranking military officer. The shake-up extends beyond Brown’s dismissal, as the president also removed Admiral Lisa Franchetti, the first woman to lead the US Navy, and several other top-ranking military officials, including the judge advocates general for the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
A Shift in Military Doctrine
This sweeping military overhaul is part of Trump’s broader strategy to reshape the Pentagon under his renewed America First foreign policy. His administration has signaled plans for a massive restructuring of the Department of Defense, including budget realignments, redefined global military commitments, and the removal of personnel deemed out of alignment with his vision.
Historically, military leadership transitions occur through structured processes, with generals and admirals serving fixed terms regardless of changes in administration. Brown, the second Black officer to hold the highest uniformed military position, was expected to serve until September 2027. However, a senior US official confirmed that he was relieved of his duties immediately, bypassing the typical Senate confirmation process for his successor.
Political Fallout and Reactions
Democratic lawmakers have strongly criticized the move, calling it a dangerous politicization of the military. Senator Jack Reed, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, warned that dismissing senior military leaders based on political loyalty rather than performance undermines the military's integrity.
“Firing uniformed officers for ideological reasons or diversity-related issues instead of merit and service record erodes trust in our military institutions,” Reed stated.
Representative Seth Moulton, a former Marine Corps officer, went even further, calling the dismissals “un-American, unpatriotic, and a direct threat to national security.”
Trump’s relationship with the military has long been complex. During his 2024 campaign, he pledged to remove so-called “woke” generals and senior officers he deemed responsible for the controversial 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan. However, the administration has not provided a detailed explanation for Brown’s removal.
“I want to thank General Charles ‘CQ’ Brown for his over 40 years of service,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “He is a fine gentleman and a great leader. I wish him and his family the best.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, a staunch Trump ally, had previously questioned Brown’s appointment, suggesting in his book The War on Warriors that his selection may have been influenced by race rather than merit. Brown, a seasoned fighter pilot with extensive command experience in the Middle East and Asia, has openly discussed racial discrimination within the military.
Trump’s latest decision also removed Admiral Lisa Franchetti, who had made history as the first female Chief of Naval Operations. Her appointment under President Biden in 2023 had been unexpected, as many had anticipated Admiral Samuel Paparo to take the role. Instead, Paparo was later promoted to lead US Indo-Pacific Command.
This isn’t the first time Trump has dismissed a groundbreaking female military leader. On his first day back in office, he fired Admiral Linda Fagan, the first female Commandant of the US Coast Guard.
