Key Highlights:

  • The IBO was conducted on Monday following intelligence reports of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) presence.

  • Security forces engaged the terrorist hideout and neutralized all militants.

  • President Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif lauded the forces for their bravery.

Operation Details

The ISPR stated that the IBO targeted Khwarij elements, a term used to refer to TTP terrorists. During the confrontation, 30 terrorists were killed in combat.

"Security forces remain committed to eliminating terrorism in Pakistan. Sanitization operations are ongoing to clear any remaining threats," the statement read.

Government's Response

Both the President and Prime Minister commended the forces, reiterating their commitment to a terror-free Pakistan.

  • President Asif Zardari stated: “We are united against terrorism. Our forces are ensuring national security by eliminating Fitna al-Khwarij.”

  • PM Shehbaz Sharif added: “We are moving closer to our goal of eradicating terrorism. The sacrifices of our brave soldiers will not be in vain.”

Terrorism in the Region

Security forces have increased counter-terrorism operations across Pakistan, particularly in North and South Waziristan. Over the past year:

  • Hundreds of IBOs have been conducted.

  • Scores of TTP militants have been neutralized.

  • Terrorist safe havens have been dismantled.

Meanwhile, a United Nations report has highlighted concerns about the Afghan Taliban’s continued support for the banned TTP, despite Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to curb cross-border terrorism.

UN Report on TTP Threat

According to the 35th Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team Report submitted to the UN Security Council, the TTP has intensified its attacks on Pakistan, launching over 600 attacks from Afghan territory in the latter half of 2024. The report also revealed that:

  • TTP enjoys financial and logistical support from the Afghan Taliban.

  • The group has established new training camps in Kunar, Nangarhar, Khost, and Paktika.

  • Pakistan continues to pressure Afghanistan to halt TTP activities.

Pakistan Army's Stance

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir reiterated the Pakistan Army’s resolve against terrorism and extremism.

“We will not allow Fitna-al-Khawarij to impose their ideology on Pakistan. They are misinterpreting Islam and causing disruption,” he said in a speech to university students.

General Munir further cited Quranic verses, emphasizing the religious obligation to fight those spreading anarchy.

Conclusion

The successful operation in South Waziristan underscores Pakistan’s continued fight against terrorism. With high-level government and military support, security forces remain vigilant in eliminating threats.
